Sustainable Cleaning of Complex Machined Components with Deep Blind Holes<\/strong><\/p>\n

At its facility in Nu\u00dfbach, Austria, GPN GmbH manufactures extrusion tooling for the production of plastic profiles. Following machining, the heavy and geometrically complex components, featuring numerous drilled passages and blind holes, are cleaned in a BUPI CLEANER\u00ae POWERTEC BASIC single-chamber aqueous cleaning system equipped with an integrated high-pressure lance module. Automating the previously manual cleaning process reduced cleaning time by 80\u201390% while significantly improving air quality in the production area.<\/em><\/p>\n

Alongside injection molding, thermoplastic extrusion<\/strong> is one of the most important manufacturing processes for producing technical plastic components. Extruded plastic pipes and profiles are found everywhere. The raw material is processed in extruders, where powdered feedstock is compacted in a controlled manner by extruder screws until it reaches a plastic state before being forced through a shaping die.<\/p>\n

Everything for Extrusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

GPN GmbH (Global Production Network) is one of the leading manufacturers of machinery and tooling for plastic profile extrusion, as well as equipment for downstream extrusion processes. Founded in 1977 under the name Uniplast<\/em>, the company employs around 350 people across locations in Austria and the Czech Republic. With more than 40 years of experience, GPN specializes in the precision machining of extrusion tools and components, particularly for the window manufacturing industry.<\/p>\n

As a dedicated manufacturing company, GPN is part of a larger extrusion group capable of providing complete solutions\u2014from greenfield projects to fully extruded finished products. At its Nu\u00dfbach facility, which opened in 1984, GPN develops and manufactures extrusion tooling and components for customers both within and outside the group.<\/p>\n

Increasing Cleanliness Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n

The components are generally large, highly complex assemblies that must withstand extremely high operating pressures. “They are therefore manufactured from high-strength alloys, often stainless steel,” explains Thomas Grabner, Head of Tool Manufacturing at GPN GmbH. “They undergo virtually every type of machining operation.” Turning, milling, deep-hole drilling, grinding, and polishing are carried out with a high degree of automation on modern CNC-controlled machines, ensuring outstanding precision and cost-effective production.<\/p>\n

After machining, every component must be completely free of chips and metalworking fluids. “Any contamination negatively affects the subsequent performance of the extruders,” says Martin Lachberger, Team Leader of GPN’s contract manufacturing division, AllEx (All Extrusion). “In addition, our customers often require the parts to be completely free of cleaning agent residues and to remain visually unchanged during extended storage periods.”<\/p>\n

A New Approach to Parts Cleaning<\/strong><\/p>\n

Until recently, all components at GPN were cleaned manually using a cleaning paste. “Not only was this an unpleasant job that required operators to wear protective masks and safety goggles, but it also negatively affected the air quality throughout the production hall,” recalls Thomas Grabner.<\/p>\n

As a result, GPN’s production specialists decided to replace the manual cleaning process with a modern automated solution. The key requirements were defined by the heavy weight of the components, their numerous cavities with blind holes up to 600 mm<\/strong> deep, and the demanding cleanliness standards of their customers.<\/p>\n

Durable and Sustainable<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Given the complexity and weight of the parts, I recommended a cleaning system from the Austrian premium manufacturer BUPI Golser Maschinenbau GmbH<\/strong>,” explains Gerald Leeb, Managing Partner of MAP PAMMINGER GmbH. “Their systems are not only robust, durable, and energy-efficient, but their modular design and high level of in-house manufacturing also make them highly adaptable to individual customer requirements.”<\/p>\n

GPN’s experts confirmed these advantages during a visit to BUPI’s production facility in Hallein-Rehhof.” We were impressed by the obvious robustness and durability of the BUPI CLEANER\u00ae systems,” says Thomas Grabner. “We also appreciated their environmental and energy performance, thanks to features such as automatic standby control and high-performance pumps with the highest energy efficiency rating.”<\/p>\n

Standard System with Customized Features<\/strong><\/p>\n

GPN selected a BUPI CLEANER\u00ae POWERTEC BASIC Size 5<\/strong> single-tank cleaning system featuring a working chamber measuring 1,400 \u00d7 1,400 \u00d7 900 mm<\/strong>. The cleaning process uses fixed spray nozzles while the workpieces rotate inside a mesh basket. Because most components are particularly heavy, GPN uses the reinforced heavy-duty version of the basket.<\/p>\n

The system is also equipped with an integrated high-pressure lance cleaning module<\/strong> operating at pressures of up to 160 bar<\/strong>. Through glove ports, an inspection window, and LED chamber lighting, operators can manually clean difficult-to-access deep holes using heated cleaning media. A compressed-air gun is also provided for blowing out blind holes.<\/p>\n

Faster Cleaning, Superior Results<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the primary contaminant is metalworking fluid, the main cleaning process is performed at a relatively low temperature of approximately 35\u00b0C<\/strong>. One significant advantage is the short cooling time before the components are inspected on a coordinate measuring machine (CMM).<\/p>\n

Another important contributor to the consistently high cleaning quality is the WIGOL<\/strong> process chemistry. Specially formulated for low-temperature cleaning, it minimizes foam formation while also providing light corrosion protection. Overall, the cleaning process has been dramatically shortened.<\/p>\n

“Where manual cleaning previously took between 30 and 60 minutes, the parts now spend only about five minutes in the cleaning system,” says Thomas Grabner. “At the same time, all cleanliness requirements are reliably achieved with consistently high quality.”<\/p>\n

Martin Lachberger adds: “By switching to automated parts cleaning in a closed cleaning system, we eliminated an unpopular manual task and were able to reassign valuable employees to more productive work.
